Description:
The artist James Gillray (1756–1815) is often credited with single-handedly inventing the genre of the British satirical print. In a career spanning almost four decades, Gillray produced some 1,500 hand-colored engravings poking fun at royalty, shortsighted politicians, military might, uptight etiquette, and hypocritical codes of morality. Drawn from the collection of the Samek Art Gallery at Bucknell University, this exhibition features eighteen of the most socially biting—and often hysterical—prints by the artist.
“Licenc’d to Bark” is presented in partnership with the Institute for the Arts and Humanities as part of the third annual Moments of Change multidisciplinary initiative, “Dare to Know!” The Late Eighteenth Century, 1776–1801.
Continues through May 16, 2010.
