Penn State University, a state research university with land grant connections, is a member of the University System of Pennsylvania (PSU) and Penn State College of Medicine. The university's athletic teams compete in most sports in the Big Ten Conference and are known as the Penn State Nittany Lions, which compete in Division I (NCAA). The Penn State mascot is the lion, after a kind of mountain lion that once roamed what is now University Park. It was founded on July 1, 1961 as a radio station on 90.7 FM (WKPS - FM) as part of a partnership between the Pennsylvania Public Broadcasting Company and Penn University.
LION broadcasts daily from the University Park campus, serving Penn State and State College communities with alternative music and talk programs, including a mix of classical music, jazz, blues, hip-hop, country, folk and alternative rock, and a variety of other genres. LION will be broadcast to the State Park, College Township, Borough and Borough Borough communities and will also serve as the primary radio station for all other communities in the Pennsylvania Public Broadcasting Company (PBC) system, which includes alternative music and talk programs. Located on the west side of Penn University's main campus at the intersection of Interstate 80 and I-80, University Park is the largest campus in Pennsylvania and one of only a handful of colleges and universities in America. South of Interstate 80, it is within the boundaries of Pennsylvania State University and the College of Medicine, and is located between the Borough of State College and the college community. Before the arrival of the Interstate, UniversityPark was a small town of about 1,000 people and a few hundred acres of land, but it has grown since then.
In 1998, the university partnered with the Pennsylvania Public Broadcasting Company (PBC) to offer the state's first alternative music and talk program, LION.
